British (BD) has formed a new partnership with Haddon Training which will allow BD to offer formal work based Apprenticeships in the industry.

The new scheme aims to support employers in building a tailored workforce with the appropriate skills and knowledge. It is also designed to help young people acquire a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining the practical experience necessary to succeed in dressage today.

Haddon Training, in partnership with BD, will offer formal, government funded Apprenticeships at Level 2 and Advanced Apprenticeships at Level 3 for 16-24 year olds. In addition, there is the opportunity to improve skills for life including essential numeracy and literacy, if required.

“We feel that these vocational qualifications are a very valuable option for young dressage riders and grooms who want to focus on building their practical skills while they work for some of the outstanding riders and trainers within the dressage industry. We are also very keen to support employers as they develop the skills they need within their workforce for the success of their own businesses,” said David Hunt, Director of Training at BD.

“Haddon Training has a very strong record within the training and vocational qualification sector and we are looking forward to working with them to support the next generation of dressage professionals.”

Haddon Training is a leading training provider specialising in the equine industry and they already work with many prestigious establishments in the dressage community as well as in other disciplines. The company has been helping young people with Apprenticeships and training for many years and in 2011 they achieved an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted on the basis of quality provision, great support and success rates.

Chris Hewlett, of Haddon Training commented; ‘Being born out of the equine industry means we fully understand the specific need to deliver a portfolio of relevant qualifications in the work place. We are excited to be working alongside British Dressage and will be keen to work closely with employers in our mission to support the next generation and offer British Dressage members the opportunity to develop recognised skills.

We are a friendly, professional team, passionate about quality and outstanding expertise to develop learners to be the best they can be.’

British is calling for supporters to attend Paralympic selection events at Hickstead (The British Para Championships 18-19 June) and (Festival of CDPI 4 – 8 July) to help create a ‘Games-like’ atmosphere.

The events will complete final preparations for the Games and it is intended that they will help accustom both the equine and human athletes to the environment of a major international show. Both shows will feature past medal winners and potential future stars in action. Initial entry lists include nine-times Lee Pearson, Sophie Wells, , and Sophie Cristiansen.

The events at both Hickstead and Hartpury will be free for and organisers are keen to bolster the crowds and attract as many supporters as possible. The aim is to create a busy show environment to ensure the horses are suitably prepared for the many unfamiliar sights and sounds at Greenwich when the Games begin in August.

Spectators are welcome across all days at both events and this is a great opportunity to get behind our Paralympian dressage riders. British Dressage Chief Executive said ‘This is a great chance to see top class dressage, particularly for those who have missed out on tickets for the Games.

We really need dressage enthusiasts to support the team with this crucial preparation for the Paralympics. It really is a case of your country needs you!’

Darby Ward (16yrs) from , Cheshire produced one of the only two double clears in the jump off of seven combinations to secure a British Win in the CSIOP in Moorsele on Carolyn ’s pony Maradonna.

In a competition which saw more than twenty starters in a field that was incredibly strong, Darby was the last to go in the jump-off. At the point of Darby entering the arena the lead was held by Lisa Nooren from the Netherlands who had produced the only double clear to date in a time of 36.73. Darby, known for both her competitiveness and speed in jump-off’s brought people to their feet applauding her when she managed to return a clear round almost four seconds faster by cutting inside a tree and back to a fence, something nobody else had achieved successfully when they had tried.

, Alan Fazakerley said afterwards “Darby’s performance was sensational today producing not only one of the two double clears but in such style and with such time in hand was phenomenal. We had a chat beforehand and discussed the turn in detail – I’m just so pleased that she managed to pull it off in the way she did that resulted in a GB win for us in Moorsele.

Alex Chitty (15yrs) from Gravesend, Kent with Amy Chitty’s Amilie JRZ and (16yrs) from Halesowen, West Midlands on Julie Adams’ Some Like It Hot took 5th and 6th place respectively having accrued 4faults apiece in the Jump Off.

In the CSIOCH Grand Prix it was Ella Popley from Haywards Heath, who was the highest placed Brit by jumping clear in the first round with Pavitt’s horse Van de Heffink. But an unfortunate 4faults in eleven strong jump off saw her slide into a 6th place finish.

The children who hadn’t competed in the earlier in show were invited to compete in the CSICH Grand Prix which saw a British win with (12yrs) from Cheshire. Riding Nick Ward’s and Michael Whitaker’s horse Witch they produced the fastest of the four double clears in the competition.

, Children’s Team Coach and Chef d’equipe commented. “Having ridden Witch during last season Emily has shown that as a combination they have both improved dramatically and I look forward to seeing her jump at the next viewing trials at Bolesworth in June. Ella Popeley jumped two superb clear rounds on her young horse to finish fourth and I look forward to watching progress throughout the season. Our next Nations Cup with the Children’s teams will be in Hagen, Germany in June”.

In a class that saw almost fifty competitors take part in the hope of winning their share of the €200,000 on offer it was Nick Skelton with ’s 11-year-old Carlo who took the top spot.

With twelve competitors qualifying for the second round, many of whom rank amongst the world’s best riders, it was always going to be an incredible Jump Off . However, it really did prove to be one that many will remember for a long time to come from the reaction of the crowds who were on the edge of the seats watching it play out in the arena before them.

Joining Nick into the second round was Ben with his own and Quainton ’s 10-year-old black . Jumping clear, one of only six who managed to do the same in the Jump Off, Ben finished in third place just behind Belgium’s Phillippe Le Jeune. An incredibly tight time between the two of them it was less half a second that separated them.

Nick seemed to be keeping an eye on the clock the entire way round the course knowing how tight the times were between those that had managed to jump clear before him. Putting his foot on the accelerator once he felt confident a clear was in his grasp he managed to open up a lead of just over a second that proved impossible to beat securing him podium position.

Talking after the class Nick said I was lucky to have a late draw so that I could watch some of the other riders go first and it goes without saying that I’m delighted to have won the today. My sights are naturally on the but I don’t want to put myself under that sort of pressure at the moment, we are just taking it week by week and it’s definitely fair to say that I’m in the extremely fortunate position of having two exceptional horses in both Carlo and Big Star”.

The competition, held with a backdrop of two Royal Homes – Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, which has been recreated as an elaborate stage in the Castle Arena for the Diamond Jubilee Pageant held on the showground each evening – was watched by a packed house enjoying summer sunshine and they were treated to a highly-charged display of horsemanship.

During the closing stages, time and again the penultimate fence – a tall vertical adorned with Alltech’s DNA Helix – fell, putting paid to many challengers’ chances. But, mid-drawn with Billy Congo set a tough , clearing the Alltech fence and charging down the arena to the last. However, a few horses later Louise used the Brendon -owned Don VHP Z’s huge stride to her advantage to take and hold the lead, despite a late charge from with Colin Garrett’s Fresh Direct Kalico Bay, who took eventual second ahead of William.

“Don VHP Z is a real winner,” said Louise.

He won the Walwyn Novice Championship here two years ago, a number of national championships and won a class here earlier in the week.He is used for breeding and was actually bred from last night, so he’s had a busy few days!”

Runner-up Tim Stockdale had claimed his own win earlier in the week aboard Fresh Direct K2, so was pleased to finish the week on a high with a strong placing in the show’s competition.
