The Countryside Alliance held its yearly ‘Rural Oscars’, in recognition of the people that ensure the success and continuation of local businesses and communities.

Making a difference

This was the award’s seventh year, and it attracted over 2,500 nominations from ten regions around Britain and Ireland. The regional winners qualified for the final, held on 7 March at a Parliamentary reception, where Countryside Alliance Chairman Kate Hoey MP announced the overall champions in each of the four categories.

Following a tough twelve months, Tina Cook is back in the running for this year’s Olympics after qualifying Miners Frolic at Ballindenisk Horse Trials.

Tragic loss

The eventer nearly lost the horse last year due to a life-threatening condition, which saw him miss most of the season. He made a return to competition at Ballindenisk in February, where he finished third in the three-star.

A herd of Dartmoor ponies are to be given a contraceptive injection in a bid to curb breeding.

Long-term solution

World Horse Welfare’s veterinary consultant Keith Meldrum has been working closely with the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association on the project, which will see 20 mares given the vaccine.

“A project of this kind has never been carried out before in the UK and I am delighted to be a part of it,” said Keith. “We are hoping that, if successful, this could become a long-term solution to the issue of overbreeding within semi-feral horse and pony populations.”

Nick Skelton’s winning streak shows no sign of abating, with yet another Grand Prix win in Florida. This was his biggest yet, winning him a substantial prize pot of $150,000.

A bit sweaty

A total of 48 riders entered the class, and 11 combinations from eight different countries made it into the jump-off. But it was Nick’s round on Beverley Widdowson's Carlo 273 that proved to be unbeatable.
